Wilmington University Community Embraces Culture Awareness at November International Fashion Show
On November 16, 2010, Wilmington University's Multicultural Club, in partnership with Student Life presented an International Fashion Show on the University’s New Castle Campus. The show brought together Wilmington University students, faculty, and staff from many unique cultural backgrounds in a celebration to embrace diversity.
Student representatives created colorful booths to showcase some of their country’s popular traditions; these booths included samples of regional cuisine, artwork, and dress. Guests then had a chance to speak with these student representatives and learn about life in these specific countries. Among the countries represented were Turkey, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Germany, Swaziland, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, China, Nepal, Scotland and Nigeria.
The event also included student performances, including the Wilmington University’s dance team—the ‘Catz Dance Team, who also modeled clothing for the fashion show. Diki Shrestha, a Business Management major, and Nitika Adhikari Chhetsi, an Accounting major, performed a Nepalese folk dance. They were excited to attend the event to meet new people and share their culture with other Wilmington University students.
The fashion show included traditional dresses from all over the world. While enjoying the fashions, guests were also part of a game of trivia that involved answering questions about different nations. The winners received Wilmington University t-shirts.
Wilmington University student, Sarah Abanoz, a business management major said she attended the show to see the diverse cultures at Wilmington University. She added that she had a lot of fun and suggested having different country’s food showcased each week in the University cafeteria.
