Wilmington University Celebrates National Distance Learning Week

In honor of National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) Wilmington University Online will be holding a number of events to celebrate distance learning and to educate the general public on the future of learning online. Each year, National Distance Learning Week, sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association, is held from November 8 -12 across the country as a way to increase "awareness and appreciation for distance learning" in arenas ranging from education to business and government sectors.

Understanding the importance of technology in higher education, Wilmington University began offering 100% online degrees in the fall of 2007. Since its inception Wilmington University Online has seen tremendous growth with more online degrees being added to the roster and new online students logging on to take classes. In addition to online degrees the University also offers online courses, hybrid courses (half online and half in-class) and has expanded the use of their online learning platform, Blackboard.

"It is both their dedication to educating our students and their willingness to use any technology that will help our students learn that has sky-rocketed enrollment,” explains Sallie Reissman, Director of Distance Learning at Wilmington University. "We are always very eager to hear feedback from our current Distance Learning students and new students who may be interested in learning online."

During NDLW students are encouraged to log on to Facebook and become a fan of Wilmington University Online. From this page, students can participate in the "Where's Wiley?" photo competition, an activity designed to unite Wilmington University students virtually. To enter the contest, students must submit a photo of themselves with a paper version of the University's mascot, Wiley. The photo can be taken anywhere: outside, in an interesting part of the country, or at home - the more creative the better. There will be prizes and giveaways for all who submit their photo. Additional details can be found at: http://www.wilmu.edu/distancelearning/ndlw.aspx

The National Distance Learning Week will wrap up at Wilmington University with a presentation on Thursday, November 11 to Faculty Senate. The presentation will highlight the University’s Distance Learning growth and future plans for supporting the online format. For the past few weeks, online students were asked to nominate their favorite online instructor to be recognized for their teaching excellence during National Distance Learning Week.  Nominated faculty will receive a special award for their service and dedication to teaching students in this technology enhanced format.
