Applied Family Science Degree
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences now offers a master’ degree in Applied Family Science (AFM). It’s designed for those who wish to gain
a greater understanding of children, youth and families in order to prepare students for professional roles in family- centered and strengths-based education, and intervention services to individuals and families in applied settings. The AFM is a practice-oriented degree and is suitable especially for individuals already working in the family or
social services sectors, education or corrections, as well as those seeking employment in applied settings. Unlike some fields where graduates focus

their job search activities on specific settings like schools, hospitals, prison systems or corporations, employment opportunities for family science graduates exist in almost all sectors of society.
“Families are the basic building blocks of society,” says Dr. Debra L. Berke, director of WilmU’s Psychology programs. “Strong families equal a strong society. Graduates from this program will have the knowledge and
skills to earn credentialing as certified family life educators to help individuals and families to change lives and realize their potential.”
Students will receive training in both the generation of research-based knowledge and its translation into effective programs and policies that can positively impact the well-being of children, youth and families. WU
