Wildcat Skipper Brian August Inducted into UD Hall of Fame
An argument can be made that there are few athletes with a better pedigree in the state of Delaware than Wilmington University Baseball Head Coach BRIAN AUGUST, who was inducted into the 20th class of the
University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame last fall.
“It’s a great honor,” August said at the induction ceremony at the Bob Carpenter Center in October. “I just wanted to go to Delaware and get a great education and play baseball. My coaches did a great job in preparing me and I was able to put up some pretty good numbers. It means everything. I can’t really even believe it yet. It’s just great.”
August grew up in Newark and became a baseball standout at St. Mark’s High School. He went on to play at Delaware from 1995–97, setting school records for career doubles (71) and RBI in a season (82). He finished his career ranked No. 2 in home runs (35), No. 3 in RBI (203) and No. 7 in batting average (.381).
He was chosen in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Yankees in 1997 and played four minor league seasons, earning New York Penn League MVP honors in 1998.
August, who is also a member of the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame, became the Wildcats skipper in the spring of 2005. He has compiled a 366-238-2 (.604) record, leading his teams to six Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships and seven NCAA Division II East Regional Tournaments. Wilmington won the 2015 NCAA Regionals, advancing to the Division II National Championship Tournament in Cary, N. C.
August has coached five CACC Pitchers of the Year, four CACC Players of the Year, and two CACC Rookies of the Year. Twelve of his student-athletes have been named All-America.
He resides in New Castle with his wife, Ashley, and children Tyler, Maddie and Cameron.
“I’m a local guy,” August said at the induction. “I wanted my family be able to see me play. Having all that success with our team and me individually, it was great for my family to see me every day. I think it’s great that I’m still around the area and
stayed here all my life.” WU
