Biography

Dr. Ed Guthrie currently serves as the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science and prior to that he was the Dean of the College of Technology at Wilmington University (WU).  He has also instructed at the undergraduate, graduate and doctorate levels for over 25 years. During his tenure as Dean, multiple programs and certificates have been developed and added to the college including programs such as the Doctorate in Social Science, Applied Family Science, Human Services and Law Policy and Political Science and multiple related certificates.  Ed has also served as a Middle States Commission on Higher Education Evaluator, most recently serving as a team Vice Chair.

In 2013, he was named the first recipient of the Dr. Betty J. Caffo Innovative Leadership Award. In 2018, he was awarded a “Laureate Citation” from Epsilon Pi Tau Honor Society for teaching, service and leadership in higher education.

Before his positions at Wilmington University, Dr. Guthrie served at Idaho State University, as a Department Chair in the College of Technology where he managed multiple programs ranging from Software Development, CADD, to Geomatics. He further instructed in the Sociology Department and Workforce Training Division. Prior to that he served as an Adjunct Faculty member at Wor-Wic Community College.

Before transitioning to education, Ed served over 29 years in law enforcement. His career included serving in Salisbury Maryland for over 20 years, ultimately as Deputy Chief of Police and Acting Chief of Police. In 1999, he was appointed Chief of Police for the city of Pocatello, Idaho.  Dr. Guthrie has also served as a certified law enforcement instructor for several years in both Maryland and Idaho teaching in the areas of management, supervision, ethics and special weapons and tactics. In 2004, he received the “Director’s Community Leadership Award,” from the Office of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Dr. Guthrie holds a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership and Innovation from Wilmington University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the 162nd Session of the FBI National Academy and the Wilmington University Leadership Institute. Dr. Guthrie is a member of the American Conference of Academic Deans, Police Executive Research Forum, FBI National Academy Associates (MD/DE Chapter) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

He has previously served as the President of the Delaware Chapter of InfraGard, a partnership between the FBI, the cyber industry and academia and currently serves on the Delaware Chiefs of Police Foundation Board.
