Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Master of Science

The M.S. Program in Community Counseling (MSCC) at Wilmington University is accredited through October 31, 2013, by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) as a Community Counseling program under the 2001 CACREP standards for Community Counseling programs. The 2009 CACREP accreditation standards combine the Community Counseling program standards and the Mental Health Counseling program standards into a single set of standards under the title of Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The MSCC program will be seeking accreditation as a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program under the new standards when it applies for reaccreditation.

As a result of these changes, the MSCC program will be changing its name to M.S. Program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) for all students who matriculate into the program following the 2011 Spring Term. In addition, per CACREP guidelines, the CMHC program will require 60 graduate credits for degree completion. Thus, all students who are applying for admission in 2011 will be applying for the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program even though the application materials may indicate MSCC. Note that the CMHC program will be very similar to the MSCC program (see attached materials). It is designed to be completed in 3 calendar years from the first term of admission which will require newly admitted CMHC students to begin taking classes in the Summer term rather than the Fall term.

Thus, during the 2011 transition year, the CMHC program will begin classes for newly admitted students in the 2011 Summer Block 2 term which begins the first week of July. To facilitate this, admission application reviews will begin on April 15, 2011, even though the published deadline for application is May 15, 2011. All applications that are complete by May 15, 2011 will be reviewed. However, to insure consideration, it is highly recommended that all applicants submit completed applications by April 15, 2011. For those applicants who are invited to interview, admissions interviews will be held on a date yet to be determined, during the time period of 6/1/11 through 6/7/11. Please plan accordingly.

To summarize, for 2011 applicants

  • MSCC program will change name to CMHC program
  • Graduation from CMHC will require 60 credits
  • Program can be completed in 3 calendar years
  • Application by April 15, 2011 is preferable
  • Admitted CMHC students will begin classes in 2011 Summer Block II term (i.e. July, 2011)
