About University Safety
The Wilmington University Department of University Safety (U.S.) is staffed by Delaware state certified constables. U.S. Constables are licensed by the State of Delaware and provide coverage for the New Castle, Wilson Graduate Center, Brandywine campus, and Dover sites. U.S. Constables are augmented by University Safety Cadets, a contract security firm as well as State, County and municipal police agencies
Constables
University Constables are sworn law enforcement agents under Title 10 Delaware Code, Chapter 27, and section 2705. Constables must abide by standards, rules, and regulations promulgated by the State of Delaware, Board of Examiners of Constables to maintain employment with the department. Duties include but not limited to the following:
- Constables, when and where necessary, will exercise the powers of arrest and detention at all Wilmington University campuses.
- Works closely with law enforcement agencies of jurisdiction.
- Responsible to patrol campus facilities, providing visible security coverage during hours of operation.
- Responds to calls for service for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as necessary.
- Constables conduct accident and criminal investigations that occur on Wilmington University campuses.
- Constables will ensure compliance with all Clery Act guidelines and follow the department’s standard operating procedures and policies.
- Provide escorts to students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as necessary.
- Conduct “Security Tours” at all sites.
- Provide safety talks to students, faculty, and staff
- Provide ID cards to students, faculty, and staff
Cadets
Department of University Safety Cadets is a Wilmington University sponsored internship program. Cadets are part-time non-sworn employees. Cadets do not have law enforcement authority. The Cadets program is designed to support daily operations of the University Safety Department and to assist the University Community. Duties of the Cadet Staff include the following:
- Responsible to patrol campus facilities, providing visible security coverage during hours of operation.
- Monitor safety desks, telephone, radios, and security/fire alarms.
- Responds to calls for service by students, faculty staff and visitors, as necessary.
- Monitor Central Command Center and make observations of unusual, suspicions or question activity and make detailed notes of the activity and/or contact the appropriate authorities.
- Work closely with University Constable Staff.
- Work the ID Access control card station.
- Secure and un-secure campus buildings and classrooms.
