Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - New Castle, DE
A room filled with ladies in elegant ball gowns, gentlemen wearing tailored tuxedos enjoying the delectable tastes from Delaware’s finest restaurants, and the riff of an electric guitar resonating around the room. This will be the scene at Wilmington University’s first scholarship gala – The Green and White Scholarship Ball, a masquerade party set for the evening of October 31 at the New Castle Campus. This university-wide fundraiser is being held to support scholarships and other benefits for the students of Wilmington University, and will feature themed party rooms that will transform the University’s Doberstein Admissions and Classroom building into an exciting atmosphere filled with the region’s best restaurants, specialty foods, beverages and musicians.
“The Green and White Ball is part of a larger University effort to protect our students during these tough economic times,” said Wilmington University President, Dr. Jack Varsalona, “Over the last year the University has implemented several programs including maintaining our low tuition, offering a ten percent discount on all textbooks at our bookstore and offering ten free financial aid seminars to the community. We are excited to be holding our first scholarship ball to raise funds for students that may need a little extra support.”
Dr. Thomas Cupples, Assistant Vice President in the Office of the President, added that the Green and White Ball is sure to be an evening of excitement. “A lot of planning and research went into this special event to make it a success,” said Dr. Cupples, “This year we are focusing on branding the Ball so that we can continue to host this fundraiser for our students in the future. The best part about it is that every penny raised will go directly back to the people that make Wilmington University who we are today...our students.”
As you arrive you will be greeted by the swinging beat of The Jim Laushey Dixiecats. This band, located at the entrance of the Ball, will set the tone for a great evening full of fun, food, auctions and cocktails. The main room, the Green and White Ballroom, will feature a silent auction with items ranging from signed sports memorabilia to televisions, boat trips, computers and more. The room will also feature a specially installed dance floor so the crowd can dance the night away to the classic rock n’ roll sounds of The Funsters.
While you are there be sure to check out all of the seven themed party rooms, each themed with the flavors, décor, textures and music of a culture from across the world or right here in the USA. Step into the Caribbean Islands room and get swept away to the tropics as Raymond Charles and the Caribbean Authentics jam out on the steel drums. Don’t miss the Southwest room where the Maya Mariachi band will serenade you with their signature Mexican trumpets and guitar. If you fancy some pub singing and lagers move onto the Irish Pub room where you will find Fisher and Maher singing the authentic sounds of the Emerald Isle. For those looking for a taste of the Orient, the Asian room is not to be missed. Classical musicians Snow Shen and Yinji Cui will entertain the crowd as the sushi chefs from Mikimotos and other local restaurants prepare your meal.
The Tour of Italy room is sure to remind you of your last trip to Venice, or the trip you have always wished for. Enjoy the tasty Italian dishes by restaurants like Café Scalessa, the Italian Kitchen and more. Dance the night away with the village folk music of Sergio and Francesco. Last, but not least, don’t forget to end your night by stopping into the New Orleans Jazz room. The fresh aroma of seafood, jambalaya and gumbo will fill the room as you relax and listen to the smooth jazz sounds of The Creative Jazz Ensemble.
The Green and White Scholarship Ball will take place in the Doberstein Admissions and Classroom Building on October 31, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Tickets are $100.00 each and all but $50.00 is tax deductable. For more information please call Alumni Relations at (302) 295-1163.
