Wilmington University is proud to be one of several sponsors at the fifth annual Newark Film Festival, which will be held from September 10 to the 17 at Cinema Center 3 in Newark. The film festival will also be held from September 25 to the 27 at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington.

Along with being a sponsor, students from Wilmington University’s College of Technology have created a commercial that will be shown between films at the festival. The students created the 30-second commercial as part of a project in their non-linear editing class.

“We are very proud of our College of Technology students,” said Scott Shaw, professor in the College of Technology, “With the help and guidance of adjunct faculty member Marcel Franck in coordination with the University Relations department the students were able to create a commercial from conception to post-production.”

Scott Shaw is also the vice president of Delaware Independent Filmmakers (DIF), an organization dedicated to providing resources for serious filmmakers and artisans in the region. This year, Delaware Independent Filmmakers worked with the Newark Film Festival to create 30-second commercials for all the sponsors of the event. The filmmakers then split into teams, each competing for a grand prize of $1000.

“Wilmington University students are a large part of our membership at DIF,” said Scott Shaw, “So when we put together these teams, many of them consisted of our students. They have been very involved in this entire process.”

The winning team has not been named yet but Scott Shaw encourages everyone to attend the festival and take a look at the commercials too. “A few of the films at the festival are made by Delaware filmmakers,” said Shaw, “It’s great to go out and support local artists.”

The Film Festival has been a popular community event for the past five years, drawing people from around the region. This year’s festival is set to be just as exciting, featuring a slew of independent films from around the world.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.newarkfilm.com or at the Cinema Center 3 box office.
