Coming to a Screen Near You: Wilmington University Student Premieres Feature Film at Smyrna Opera House

Wilmington University student Jonny Duerr plans to awe crowds at the premiere of his latest feature film project, “Meeting the Wickersons," which opens at the Smyrna Opera House May 16th at 7 p.m. A post-premier meet and greet with the director and cast will immediately follow.

"Meeting the Wickersons" is a dark comedy detailing the life of an unsuspecting clairvoyant woman whose mental degeneration is revealed during an interview. The story is loosely based on true events set in 1972.

Drawn to the art of storytelling, Duerr switched his focus from acting to directing in 2011. He left University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to study Studio Production and Digital Filmmaking at Wilmington University.

Duerr directed, produced, and co-wrote the film with Kara Boland. The film took five months to write, five days to shoot and five months in production.

This is the first feature-length film premiere at the Smyrna Opera House and Duerr hopes to fill the 250-seat auditorium.

“One thing I want the audience to take away is the experiment of the story structure,” says Duerr, “It is not classically written because I wanted to develop a character that is intimidating and not your usual lead.”

Tickets are $5 and are available at the box office. Tickets are also available online at smyrnaoperahouse.org.
