The spring rain subsided long enough for 249 Wilmington University graduates to take the stage and receive their diplomas yesterday, May 11, 2009 in Georgetown, Delaware. The commencement was held at the Owens campus of Delaware Technical and Community College and honored students from Wilmington University’s southern Delaware locations including Dover, Dover Air Force Base, and Georgetown.
There was great anticipation and excitement in the air. Edward Johnson Junior, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program said he had a great experience at Wilmington University and would recommend the school to others. “I was able to use the information I gained in class in my everyday working environment, and that is something you don’t find anywhere else.” Graduate Ryan Davis, who was earning a Master of Business Administration and a Masters in Health Care Administration, said he was excited to move on with the next step of his life. “I am eager to see what doors this degree may open for me.”
Holly S. Marvel, graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, was the commencement speaker. “The education I have received at Wilmington University has allowed me to achieve my goals,” said Marvel, who is currently employed at the Bayhealth Medical Center as a Nurse Manager of the 37-bed In-Patient Rehab Unit. She went on to say, “My bachelor’s degree has given me the foundations on which to build my nursing career...thank you.” Marvel is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) and an Orthopedic Nurse Certified (ONC), she is also a co-chair for the In-Patient Rehab 2009 American Heart Association Heart Walk. Marvel and her family are residents of Georgetown, Delaware.
Wilmington University President Dr. Jack P. Varsalona congratulated the graduates saying, “May you seize this day and those that are to follow...this University is proud of you, and remember you will always be a cherished member of the Wilmington University family.”
