The top-seeded Wildcats of Wilmington University advanced to the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer tournament with a 2-0 victory over #8 Goldey-Beacom College in the opening round on Monday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

Wilmington, entered the match ranked number 12 in the latest NSCAA poll, and also held a regional ranking of two (NSCAA) and three (NCAA) in the East.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, despite quality opportunities from Wilmington, as the Wildcats kept the pressure on the Lightning half of the pitch for much of the period. The ‘Cats finally broke through six minutes into the second half as senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh played a through ball back through the 18 yard box, where it found the foot of sophomore Nickalus McDonald. McDonald let a one-timer rip, and found the back of the net to give the green and white the 1-0 advantage. Less than two minutes later, senior Probyn Allen took a pass from classmate Dave Dease, and let a shot loose from just above midfield. The ball curled over the Lightning keeper and gave the Wildcats some insurance with a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (14-0) made one save in the shutout victory, while Ignacio Farias (two goals against, four saves, 78 minutes) and Andrew Cairns (two saves, 12 minutes) shared time in goal for Goldey-Beacom. The Wildcats out-shot the Lightning by a 17-6 margin, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington’s 14th straight, the Wildcats improved to 19-2 on the season, while Goldey-Beacom closed out the books on their 2009 campaign with a 6-12 mark.
