The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University closed out the regular season with a 2-2 tie against the host Hornets of Delaware State University in non-conference women’s soccer action on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Wilmington struck first when Brittany Rhodes and Kory Webster would work together down the left flank to find Kirsten Stallone just to the left of the penalty spot, and her right footed strike would beat DSU keeper Courtney Haas low and to her left in the 19th minute. The Wildcats would hold the run of play for most of the first half, out shooting the Hornets 6-2, and earning three corners against none for the home side.
Delaware State tied the game at one during the 73rd minute when Theresa Wappett chipped a ball in from Ashlee Gourdine. Gourdine struck again just 10 minutes later, on an unassisted tally to give the Hornets the 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Wilmington’s Klaudia Furman tied the game, as she chipped a ball from the right side near the edge of the penalty area to the far post and over Haas' head.
Wilmington’s Amanda Walters recorded 10 saves in goal, while Courtney Hass had nine saves for the Hornets. The Wildcats were outshot 25-14 by the hosts, and DSU had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Following the game, Wilmington closed out the regular season at 9-6-2 overall, while Delaware State stood 1-14-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, when they begin play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament.
