The Wildcats of Wilmington University gave the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University all they could handle, but they still came up short, falling 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Gymnasium.
Georgian Court took the first set by a 25-13 margin, but the ‘Cats answered back with a 25-19 win in set two. Wilmington had the lead in the third set, but fell late and lost 25-23. The Lions sealed the victory with a 25-13 set in the fourth and final set.
Wilmington was led by junior outside hitter Meghan Frick, who had eight kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Paige Norvell added six kills and 15 digs, while senior middle hitter Brittani Leathern had six kills and three blocks. Junior libero Brittany O’Neill had 11 digs, while sophomore setter Shannon Rumple had 26 assists and four aces.
The Lions were led by Lissette Zayas, who posted 10 kills and 19 digs. Stephanie Rivera added 11 kills, while Janelle Murdock chipped in with 10 kills and eight digs. Setter Lisamary Figueroa had seven kills, 39 assists, and 13 digs in a solid all-around effort, while libero Ana Cruz recoded a match-high 20 digs.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 8-8 in the CACC and 12-14 overall, while Georgian Court improved to 15-0 in the CACC and 20-8 on the season. The Wildcats return to the court on Thursday eveving, when they travel to take on the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest beginning at 7:00 PM.
