The 14th ranked Wildcats of Wilmington University edged the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College, 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.
Wilmington got on the board during the 13th minute when senior midfielder Fatoma Turay sent a through ball just outside the 18 yard box to sophomore Nickalus McDonald. McDonald one-touched the ball around the keeper, then poked it into the back of the net to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, Felician tied the game at one when Carlos Canido buried a free kick opportunity into the upper corner of the net. Neither team would score again in the first half, and the two squads headed into the break knotted at one.
The score would remain tied at one for the majority of the second half. Wilmington finally broke through in the 85th minute as junior Chris Simm took a shot that was saved by Felician keeper David LoBue, but the ball came loose and Simm knocked it home to give the ‘Cats the 2-1 lead. That score would hold, and the Wildcats clinched the regular season CACC title with their 13th straight victory.
Wilmington’s Duhan Malali (12-0) recorded three saves in goal, while LoBue had six saves for Felician. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Falcons by a 12-10 margin and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 10-0 in the CACC and 17-2 overall, while Felician dropped to 1-8-1 in the conference and 3-12-1 on the season. The Wildcats close out the regular season on Wednesday afternoon, when they play host to the Eagles of Post University in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.
