Senior harrier Danielle Burcham won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship and earned CACC Runner of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, while freshman Bill Steele captured the Men’s Rookie of the Year award at the Conference Championships.
The women’s squad finished fifth out of 14 teams, while the men were second, but among 10 teams. The races took place at the Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia.
On the women’s side, the Lady Wildcats (129 points) were fifth behind eventual champion Philadelphia University (31), Georgian Court University (61), Dominican College (122), and USP (129). Felician College (140), Nyack College (144), Holy Family University (214), Post University (258), Chestnut Hill College (275), Goldey-Beacom College (316), Bloomfield College (319), Concordia College (338) and Caldwell College (343) rounded out the remaining finishers.
Burcham crossed the finish line in a time of 19:52 for the 5k course. For her efforts she was awarded the CACC Runner of the Year award and also was named All-Conference for the fourth time in four years. Close behind her was sophomore Danielle Riley, who came in 11th place with a time of 21:49. Riley also eanred All-CACC honors. Freshman Kristy McCrea (22:47/22ndplace), junior LJ Slaughter (23:02/26th place) and freshman Alexis Zabielski (27:42/69th place), rounded out the scorers for the ‘Cats.
Coach Keith Jones was named CACC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for his work with the squad this season.
On the men’s side, Wilmington (43 points), was second behind eventual champion Philadelphia (32). Felician (73), USP (134), Bloomfield (155), Holy Family (164), Chestnut Hill (202), Nyack (208), Goldey-Beacom (223), and Post (295) rounded out the remaining teams.
Freshman Bill Steele placed third in a time of 27:48, earning him CACC Rookie of the Year and All-Conference honors in his first year. Close behind Steele was senior Matt O’Brien (28:27/7th place), senior Chad Darlington (28:47/10th place), sophomore Rodney Rosario (28:56:28/11th place), and senior Kyle Barnum (28:56:83/12th place). Freshman Vinnie Trotta finished 14th in a time of 29:02. O’Brien, Darlington, Rosario, Barnum, and Trotta all earned All-CACC honors for their performances.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, November 8th, when they travel to participate in the NCAA Regional Championship Meet at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
