The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University rallied to defeat the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 3-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.
The Griffins, who came into the contest in first place in the conference standings, took a 1-0 lead when Lauren Riiff converted a penalty kick opportunity during the 20th minute. The visitors would hold that one-goal advantage until the final minutes of the half, as sophomore Angelica Appold connected on a feed from freshman Molly Taylor to tie the game.
Wilmington turned up the pressure to start the second half, and it paid off when junior midfielder Amanda Davis buried a rebound from a shot from classmate Kirsten Stallone at the 66:35 mark. Sophomore forward Klaudia Furman later added an insurance goal, on an unassisted tally during the 71st minute, giving the ‘Cats the 3-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle.
The Wildcats’ Amanda Walters (4-1) recorded three saves in goal, while the duo of Jessica Veazey and Caitlin Lafferty shared time in net for Chestnut Hill. Veazey had nine saves (three goals against) in 80 minutes of work before giving way to Lafferty (one save) for the remainder of the game. Wilmington outshot the Griffins by a convincing 27-5 margin, and held the 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 7-2 in the CACC and 8-4 overall, while Chestnut Hill dropped to 6-3-1 in the conference and 9-5-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Lions of Lincoln University in a non-conference match beginning at 3:00 PM.
